Chicago's boating season is short, and the best nights on the water cluster around a handful of dates: Navy Pier fireworks, the three summer holiday weekends, the Air & Water Show and Lollapalooza.
This guide covers what each event looks like from a boat, when the Chicago boating season starts and ends, and a month-by-month calendar so you can lock in the right date before it books up.
Chicago Fireworks Boat Nights

Wednesday night fireworks
Midweek dates are usually easier to get, which makes Wednesday a good pick for date nights, client outings and smaller groups.
Saturday night fireworks
Saturday is the more popular night. Gather your friends or family, bring your favorite snacks and drinks, and book early — weekend fireworks dates are the first to go.
Navy Pier sets the fireworks schedule and can change it, so confirm your date before booking.
Chicago Air & Water Show by Boat
Held every August off North Avenue Beach, the Chicago Air & Water Show fills the sky over the lakefront with jet teams and aerial stunts. Watching from a boat on the lake puts you under the flight line without fighting for a spot on the sand, and you can stay out for the whole show.
It's one of the most requested weekends of the summer, so it's worth booking as soon as the dates are announced.

Memorial Day weekend

When Does Chicago Boating Season Start?
Chicago's boating season typically runs from April to late October. Peak season — when the fireworks are running and the Playpen is busiest — is Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
The shoulder months on either side are quieter and cooler on the water, and the season winds down in late October as the weather turns. Conditions on the lake always decide whether a charter goes out; our boating FAQs cover weather, rescheduling and what to bring.
Best Chicago Boat Events by Month
April
The season opens. Cooler water and quiet harbors — good for skyline cruises.
May
Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer, and the Wednesday and Saturday Navy Pier fireworks begin.
June
Long evenings, weekly fireworks and full Playpen weekends. A good month for birthdays, bachelorette parties and company outings before July books up.
July
The Fourth of July is one of the biggest days on the lake, and July weekends bring organized boat parties in the Playpen.
August
Two major events: Lollapalooza in Grant Park around the turn of the month — a boat is a way to soak up the atmosphere without the crowds — and the Air & Water Show off North Avenue Beach.
September
Labor Day weekend and the last of the Navy Pier fireworks, followed by quieter weekends on the water.
October
The last cruises of the year before the season ends in late October.

The Playpen
